This week, we saw the release of iOS 4.3, which might affect you more than you think. There are also rumors about the A5 processor manufacturing source and the iPhone 5.
Apple Moving A5 Production?
Apple has moved on from Samsung for production of A5 processors, which will be used in the new iPad 2 models. It’s also rumored that the A5 processor will show up in the yet-to-be-announced iPhone 5. The manufacturing of the chip will now go to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Apparently, the new company can make better editions of the A5 and the move shifts money away from Samsung, which could be considered an indirect competitor in the marketplace.
White iPhone 4 Finally Coming
It took a full year to get to market, but it looks like Apple has started making the white version of the iPhone 4. However, Verizon folks might be left out in the cold, as the new white edition will only be available for AT&T customers when it first appears. Remember that the iPad 2 will be offered in black and white, so it makes sense that the white iPhone 4 would appear on the market at the same time, or just after, the iPad 2.
Apple Releases iOS 4.3
Apple released the new edition of its operating system for mobile devices, iOS 4.3. The updates can be applied to the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. Users can update their devices by plugging them in clicking the “Check for Update” button if it doesn’t pop up in iTunes.
iOS 4.3 comes with quite a few upgrades, including AirPlay video compatibility for third-party apps and websites, Safari speed improvements, home sharing to stream media from an iTunes library to an iOS device over Wi-Fi, and a new option for customizing the iPad’s side switch. iOS 4.3 also comes with a personal hotspot functionality.
Safari 5.0.4 Released
Along with the release of iOS 4.3, Apple has released Safari 5.0.4, bringing many enhancements to the popular web browser. The update includes improved stability for webpages. A fix was inserted for an issue that could cause some pages to print incorrectly and there was also a fix released for content displaying the wrong way on pages that used plug-ins. Finally, there has been improved compatibility, stability, and performance when using VoiceOver.
AppleTV Releases Update
Also updated was AppleTV, which included great news for baseball fans. Major League Baseball announced that live and archived streams of baseball games are now available through AppleTV. The regular season subscription package includes HD quality, live and archived games, home and away broadcasts, and quick navigation to scoring plays. The subscription costs between $19.99 per month and $24.99 per month, or between $99.99 and $119.99 per year. With this update, you can also get access to the NBA’s League Pass feature.
iPhone 5 Feature Rumors
There are rumors flying around that the iPhone 5 will feature an A5 Dual Core processor. There has been evidence of this uncovered by the release of iOS 4.3 SDK to developers. Historically, Apple has refreshed the iPhone line once each year around June or July.
iPad 2 Reviews
The iPad 2 comes out on Friday, but the reviews are starting to pour in. MacWorld is saying that the new model has twice as much RAM as the previous model. Engadget said that the iPad 2 packed over 10 hours of non-stop playback, which is an improvement over the first model, and that cameras aren’t suited for stills, but are useful for videos.
