Mac News and Rumors for March 31st

 

This week, we have some big news in the Apple and poker worlds. First, the date has been set for WWDC 2011, which is the biggest Apple developer conference of the year. After that, we have news about the iPad 2, which will apparently start showing up in a new USA retail store location.

iPad 2 Release News

It’s been a few weeks since the iPad 2 was released and wait times at the Apple Store online have been four to five weeks. That is, until only a day or two ago, when it was reduced to three to four weeks.  Non-USA iPad 2 orders are now being taken and have two to three-week shipping estimates.  Also, it appears that Radio Shack will start carrying the iPad 2.

Victory Poker Moving Again?

There’s a rakeback website reporting that Victory Poker will be leaving the Cake Poker Network and moving to the CEREUS Network to join UB.com and Absolute Poker. Poker News Daily confirmed that talks have taken place, but no deal has been announced.

Apple Looking to Improve Maps

Apparently, Apple isn’t too happy with its GPS-compliant application Maps, as a new job listing on Apple’s website seeks an iOS Maps Developer who can “radically improve” the application. The posting is similar to one from 2009 that wanted to take the app to the next level. Apple has wanted to increase the scope of the Maps app, including navigation and location-based services given its acquisitions of Placebase and Ploy9.

Apple Unleashes iOS 4.3.1

Apple released a new update for the mobile operating system, iOS 4.3.1, last Friday. It brings some minor fixes and enhancements for Apple’s operating system for iPads, iPods, and iPhones. The first fix is for an occasional graphics glitch on the iPod Touch. The second is a bug resolution related to activating and connecting to cellular networks.  There’s also a fix for image flickering when using the Apple Digital AV adapter and, finally, there’s a resolution to an issue authenticating with enterprise web services. Right now, there is no update for the CDMA (Verizon) iPhone.

Apple Wins Patent Lawsuit Against Nokia

The U.S. International Trade Commission issued a decision in Apple’s favor saying that Apple did not violate any of the five patents cited by Nokia. Nokia initially filed suit back in October 2009 and both companies escalated the hostility by adding counter-suits.

Master OS X Lion Nearing

Everyone who covers Mac news is reporting that Apple is extremely close to the first copy of Mac OS X Lion for developers. Apple first previewed the edition back in October and released a developer version last month. Apple has stated that Lion will be released sometime in the summer.

WWDC 2011: June 6th to 10th

The biggest Apple conference of the year is set for June 6th to 10th, as the Worldwide Developer Conference will be underway once again from San Francisco. Tickets are on sale for $1,599 and are fully expected to sell out well in advance. There will be over 100 technical sessions for developers and over 1,000 Apple engineers will be on-hand to provide support for those in attendance.
